for a film showing and panel discussion Probing the Recent Rioting in France Film: Games of Love and Chance (L'Esquive) by Abdellatif Kechiche In French with English subtitles (France 2004, 117mins) Panel: Prof. Farid Laroussi (Yale) Prof. James McDougall (Princeton) Aslı Bâli (Moderator), ADC New York Tuesday, January 24, 2006, 6:30 pm* Cantor Film Center (New York University) 36 East 8th Street (near University Place) About the film: Many media portrayals of Paris' suburban (banlieue) outskirts, inhabited mostly by North African immigrants, have focused on themes of crime and violence. But Games of Love and Chance, the second film by Tunisian-born, French-educated director Abdellatif Kechiche, adopts a rewardingly different approach: a sensitive, observational portrait of young love that focuses on the decency and humanity of its characters. Restless 15-year-old Krimo develops a crush on a lovely classmate, Lydia, and manages to get himself cast opposite her in a school play to win her affection. The eighteenth century play they rehearse highlights the stark contrasts between their lives. This film recently swept the Césars (French Oscars), winning Best French Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Upcoming Actress. Post-Screening Panel: Professors Laroussi and McDougall will lead a discussion of the film and engage with questions concerning the causes and consequences of the recent riots in France. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A session with the panelists, moderated by ADC New York Board Member Aslı Bâli. * Box office opens 30 minutes prior to screening. Ticket prices: $9 (students with valid ID/senior citizens: $7). Advance tickets are available at www.arteeast.org or call 718 832-6564. |
